As I navigated through significant life changes — a divorce, moving out on my own, and the quest to rediscover my identity — I stumbled upon a transformative experience at Lit Diaries on March 21st, 2023. This particular open mic night aimed to rekindle my love for performing spoken word poetry, and little did I know that it would lead me to a community that would change the trajectory of my life.
The night was not just about poetry; it was about connections and fate. Meeting my long-time hero, Tamika Newhouse, in person was a surreal moment. That evening marked the genesis of a journey that would become an integral part of my life. Recognizing the sense of belonging, I eagerly signed up for every event scheduled for that weekend.
Stepping out of my comfort zone, I decided to volunteer as the Communications Coordinator for AAMBC. The decision was driven by my innate gift of gab, a skill I believed could contribute positively to the community. Little did I know that this step would be the catalyst for personal and professional growth.
Participating in Black Writers Weekend (BWW) in 2023, I took on various roles, including Program Management, Talent Management, Vendor Relations, and check-in. Each role provided a unique perspective, exposing me to a multitude of talented individuals and pushing me to acknowledge and have confidence in the skills I possessed. It was a revelation — a realization that I had untapped potential waiting to be unleashed.
Engaging in these diverse roles not only expanded my network but also inspired me to tackle a project I had long dreamed of — finishing my book. With the unwavering support of the incredible team associated with AAMBC Inc, under the visionary leadership of Tamika Newhouse and the guidance of Kimberly Latrice Jones, I found the courage to pursue my passion for writing.
Now, as I embark on a new chapter with AAMBC Inc and Lit Diaries, I find myself in a space of pure fulfillment. Every moment spent with this dynamic community feels like a step closer to my true calling.
